This calendar includes events organized by several groups, in the service of displaying as complete a constellation of local poetry for April as possible.To have your event listed, contact us. Also, please check back for updates on this ever-evolving schedule.
Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Thursday/3rd:Reading at Manual High School, 120 W. Lee St., 2:45-4 p.m.

7:30 p.m. Axton Reading Series presents Marianne Boruch reading at UofL, Ekstrom Library's Bingham Poetry Room.

APRIL 4th-5th Opening Events

Friday/4th: First Friday Trolley Hop on Market Street. Events sponsored by the East Downtown Business Association. Reading poetry on the street and in the galleries. Outdoor projections by Pam Swisher.

8 p.m. Adam Day & Erin Keane read poetry at St. John Renaissance Theater. Music by The Big Time Band and Brett Eugene Ralph. $5.

Saturday/5th: Art & Poetry in the Water Tower, in conjunction with the Louisville Visual Art Association. 2-4 p.m. Readings by Maureen Morehead, Laurie Deusing, Michael Penman, and Misha Feigin.

uzoMa art space. 7 p.m. Reading by Brett Eugene Ralph. 1813 Frankfort Avenue.

Other Dates in April

Tuesday/8th: 7:30 p.m. Sarabande Books presents nationally renowned poet Gerald Stern. Rreading will take place at the Bingham Poetry Room in the University of Louisville's Ekstrom Library.

Thursday/10th: JCC Spring Festival.
Axton Reading Series at University of Louisville, featuring Rae Armantrout, 7:30 p.m., Ekstrom Library Bingham Poetry Room.

Friday/11th: InKy Reading Series. Poetry by Tom C. Hunley, Ellyn Lichvar, & Ben Lesousky. Music by Jamie Barnes. The Rudyard Kipling. Open Mic starts at 7 p.m.
Followed by: Insmoniacathon, 10 p.m. - 2 a.m. $20 tickets available at ear x-tacy.

Saturday/12th (and every Saturday night): Open Mic at Expressions of You Coffeehouse, 1800 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. Doors open at 9; readings begin at 10-10:30.

Wednesday/16th: Reading of beloved poems by Dianne Aprile, Judi Jennings, Claudia Peralta-Mudd, Fred Smock, Merle Bachman, Cia White & Lauren Titus, starting at 7 p.m. at Ray's Monkey House. 1578 Bardstown Rd.

Friday/18th: 9 p.m. LIVE MUSIC & SPOKEN WORD ART to benefit the Henry Wallace Community Center for the Elderly in La Guinera, Cuba, including performances by SHADWICK WILDE, AFRYKAH, CAROL KRAEMER, Poet MICHAEL BISHOP, THE BROKEN CAROUSEL ORKESTRA, and APPALATIN. Performances begin at 9 pm at The Rudyard Kipling 422 W. Oak Street. Recommended donation $5-25 sliding scale.

Sunday/20th: Carmichael's Bookstore, Frankfort Ave. 4 p.m. reading by Annette Allen , Kathleen Driskell, and Amelia Peagram Blossom.

Monday/21st: Pink Door presents Thousand Poets: Merle Bachman, Nickole Brown, Jessica Farquhar, and Kate Welsh read starting at 7:30 p.m. Music to follow by The Moving Sidewalk.

Wednesday/23rd: Iroquois Public Library Teen Wednesday Poetry Program, 3:30 p.m. Middle and high school students welcome.
7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Poetry and Spoken Word Open Mic Sponsored by Syzygy

Original acoustic music also welcome.

Thursday/24th: Lynell Edwards & Nickole Brown read at RopeWalk in New Harmony, IN.

APRIL 25th-29th Closing Events

Friday/25th: Speed Art Museum, 2-4 p.m. readings in the galleries by Merle Bachman, Jeffrey Bean, Bryan Scichilone, Casey Aud, Adam Day, Emily Bonden, and Lynell Edwards.

Frankfort Avenue Trolley (F.A.T. Friday) Hop. Readings at Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center and other venues along the trolley route.

Saturday/26th (Sábado, 26 de abril): Celebrate the Day of the Child / Celebre El Día de Los Niños,12:30 p.m. Iroquois Public Library.
Join us for bilingual stories, crafts and fun for the entire family. Share, read and learn bilingual rhymes and poems and make your own books.

Evening: Expressions of You Coffeehouse and Spalding University’s BFA in Creative Writing present a spoken word poetry event at ELC, 4th & Breckenridge.

Sunday/27th: 4:30-5:30 p.m. Languages of Louisville Organized by Spalding University & The Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, Java Brewing Company 2309 Frankfort Avenue

6:30 p.m. Reading at Quills Coffee and Books: Emma Aprile, Sarah Landenwich, and Sarah Jarboe.

Monday/28th: Sarabande Books presents Mary Jo Bang. 7:30 p.m. Pink Door Reading Series at 2222 Dundee Road. Music to follow by Sarah Elizabeth.

Tuesday/29th: Spiritual Poetry Circle, with readings from poets' personal collections as well as other poetry. Professional storyteller Cynthia Changaris will add music and story to this evening of sacred poetry. Readers include Maryam Hand, Barbara Stallard, Nan Goheen, Dan McCarthy, Charles and Jenny Upton, Margaret Stewart, Michael Jackman, and Jessica Farquhar.
7 p.m. at the Hara Center, 1039 Ash Street. (Corner of Hickory & Ash).
